Compliance regulations are affecting many industries. Regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are broadly applicable across multiple industries, while other compliance regulations such as HIPAA and GLBA are industry-specific. The advent of state laws such as SB1386, the California data privacy law, (and the similar legislation that is either passed or pending in 30+ other states) is serving to ensure that data security breaches quickly become public knowledge regardless of industry sector.
In addition, some industries are beginning to institutionalize de facto compliance standards. The payment card industry has developed Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, which puts forth data security standards affecting retailers and many other organizations that accept credit cards for payment.
