Eight new cyber security standards for Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) of the nation’s Bulk Electric System became mandatory and enforceable in January 2008. Developed and enforced by the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC), the NERC CIP standards – CIP-002-1 through CIP-009-1 – impact electric utilities with critical cyber assets that control the reliability of the system, including generation plants and substations. 

Deadlines for compliance with the full intent of the CIP regulations are rapidly approaching when viewed from the perspective of the effort and resources involved to meet the requirements. While some Responsible Entities have earlier deadlines than others, all owners and operators of critical cyber assets supporting the Bulk Power System are required to be in full compliance with 12 calendar-months of auditable documentation by December 31, 2010.
